What is Radon?

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced by the breakdown of uranium deep in the soil.

When uranium decays, it breaks down into another solid called radium. Over thousands of years radium decays and forms a radioactive gas called radon.

Mother Nature puts a vacuum on the earth and draws radon and other soil gases to the surface.

When you build a structure over it, the radon gases become trapped.

But then the air handling equipment in a building creates a slight vacuum drawing right on inside through cracks in the slab, around plumbing piping, through cinder block walls, floor drains and wall cavities.

Once inside, radon can collect to levels the EPA warns is a potential health concern. Prolonged exposure to elevated levels of radon can cause lung cancer. (Radon is the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer behind smoking and No. 1 among “non-smokers”.

Radon sources are generally based on area geology, (where there is a lot of granite in the earth). When you think about Paris Mountain, Caesar’s head and being at the foothills of the Blue Mountains, you can understand why radon is frequently a problem in the South Carolina upstate. EVERY home in the United States has SOME degree of radon, the question is “how much?” The only way to KNOW the answer to that on YOUR home is to get it tested!
